5 Key Skincare Tips For Spring/Summer

5 Key Skincare Tips For Spring/Summer

One of the greatest truths in beauty is that your makeup is only as good as the skin beneath it. Unless you’re taking care of your skin in a way that has it feeling happy, healthy and well nourished, your makeup will never be at its best.

Sure, we can cover up blemishes, use a smoothing primer, opt for a fuller coverage etc, but truly exceptional makeup isn’t solely reliant on product performance.

As we transition into spring and summer we’ll also be noticing transitions in our skin that will require us to switch up our routine and products. Over the warmer months we can typically see our skin become oilier, more porous and dehydrated. Plus, our need for sun protection becomes more important than ever.

I’ve identified 5 Key Skincare Tips to have your skin on point this season.

1.Drinking Water

Your skin contains more than 60% water, which contributes to its plumpness and elasticity therefore drinking more water helps us to remove impurities from our bodies, which is essential to keep skin cells full and hydrated, reducing the risk of cracking and peeling.

To understand just how much water is best for you to be drinking each day, take your weight in lb, multiply by 67% and you’ll get the average number of ounces of water is ideal for you to consume daily.

Here are some great ways to ensure that you’re drinking enough water each day:

1. Carry a bottle of water, or keep a glass of water by your desk and refill it often.

2. Set reminders on your phone to drink at regular intervals throughout the day .

3. Add lemon, lime or cucumber to make water more palatable.

4. Make it a habit to drink water when you wake up and with every snack and meal.

Fortunately, increasing your water intake is fairly simple once you incorporate it into your daily routine.

2.Exfoliate Skin

Exfoliating your skin regularly is the key step for a smooth and glowing complexion.

It’s common that your skin is typically dryer, flakier and duller during the winter months, so spring is a great time to get rid of the dead skin cells that are sitting on the surface of your skin to rejuvenate and refresh your complexion! Light exfoliation approximately twice per week is ideal. My favourite exfoliator is LE GOMMAGE - anti-pollution exfoliating gel

It’s concentrated with natural-origin pink jojoba microbeads, violet micro-algae, known for their oxygenating properties, and marine spring water, renowned for its remineralising benefits. These ingredients can make your skin smoother, pores tighter and skin texture more refined.

1. Apply to the entire face, avoiding the eye area.

2. Make small circular movements, starting from the base of the jaws and working upwards towards cheeks.

3. Then, exfoliate the T-zone: from the forehead to the area between the brows and the bridge of the nose. Finish by delicately massaging the lip contour and chin.

4. Carefully rinse with hot water to remove all traces of the exfoliator. Gently dry skin with a clean towel in the end.

3.Clean Up Make-Up Brushes

Keeping your make-up brushes and sponges clean is an indispensable step in protecting your skin, especially your  foundation and concealer brushes, which needs to be cleaned at least once every one to two weeks to prevent product buildup. Between washes, your brushes will develop bacteria which is then recontaminating your skin with each application to your face. Using a simple cleanser like my personal favourite, Sea Salt and Vanilla Vegan Brush Soap  will help keep your brushes clean and your skin clear. (and smelling amazing!)

Spectrums Luxury Vegan Brush Soap, is a 100% vegan solid brush soap with a super handy silicone cleaning mat set within the lid.

Made in the UK with a coconut milk base and a luscious Sea Salt and Vanilla scent, this solid soap will deep clean and condition your brushes at the same time. Notably, this brush soap is registered with the Vegan Society.

Here are 4 steps to wash your make-up brushes correctly:

1.Wet the tip of your brush in water (Make sure DO NOT submerge the ferrule or the handle as the bristles and the ferrule are glued in place ).

2.Swirl the brush in the soap tin then massage it onto the silicone cleaning mat.

3.Rinse and repeat until the water runs clear and the bristles of the brush appear thoroughly clean of any makeup product.

4.Squeeze out the excess moisture and lye flat to dry. Never let your brushes dry standing up - the adhesive in the ferrule that holds the bristles in place can dampen therefore causing the bristles of your brush to fall out over time.

4.Sun Protection

This new season is unpredictable, especially in early spring when there’s cold wind and the dust in the air and the gradually increasing ultraviolet rays are threatening to our skin. Even weak sunlight can cause sunspots to appear on the skin and sun damage to be quietly causing impact whist we go about our busy lives.

Sunscreen is therefore the great protector of our skin and the most significant ageing preventative.

When buying sunscreen, look for

• a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 to protect against UVB

• at least 4-star UVA protection

UVA protection can also be indicated by the letters “UVA” in a circle, which indicates that it meets the EU standard.

Two excellent sunscreens that i recommend are Clinique and La Roche-Posay.

Anthelios Ultra-Light Invisible Fluid SPF50+

Ultra-resistant formula specifically developed for sensitive skin. A very high protection, broad-spectrum (PPD 46, SPF 50+) comfortable fluid formula that is ultra water, sweat, and sand resistant. This non-greasy cream doesn’t leave white marks and doesn’t migrate.

Super City Block SPF 40

High-level daily sun protection in a sheer, weightless formula. For all skins, even the most sensitive. Offers SPF 40 protection from the sun's UVA/UVB rays. Contains antioxidants. Wear alone or as an invisible under-makeup primer. 100% Fragrance-Free.

5.Wash Your Make-Up Off Thoroughly

Removing your make-up should be the last but most crucial part of the daily skincare ritual as it washes away cosmetics, impurities and dirt from the surface of your skin, which leaves skin free to breathe. Choosing a good tool for deep cleansing is the first step to successful make-up removal and these are two cleansing cloths I use and love:

Seoulista Magic Cleanse

This double-sided re-usable cleansing tool delivers twice the cleansing action with one side for gentle exfoliation, and the other for a naturally antibacterial cleanse. Use the textured side to loosen makeup and daily grime, then flip over to the fluffy side to allow the natural, antibacterial fibres grip and lift oil, makeup and impurities from deep within pores as you sweep across the skin.

Cloud Cloth

Comforting, lightweight, gentle on skin. Soft, soothing one side and buffs gently on the other. Washable - re-use again and again. 100% Organic cotton. These are a delight to use and totally eco friendly.

Bioderma Sensibio H2O

If you’re looking for a great product to remover your make-up, this cleansing and make-up removing micellar water is perfect for the whole face and is ideal for sensitive skin. Made up of micelles with excellent cleansing and make-up removing properties, Sensibio H2O deeply cleanses and prevents the impact of pollutants that are likely to exacerbate skin sensitivity.
